MANKATO — Talk about advance admission.

The Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota got its tiniest new member the other day.

A woman went into labor Saturday during an adults event at the new Children's Museum.

The woman, Brooke Burke, was in the museum's Tree of Forts Climber when it happened.

"I leaned over to one of my friends and said, 'I think that my water just broke,'" Burke said. "She looked at me and asked if I was serious."

She was.

Burke's friends rushed her down and took her to the Mankato hospital. She delivered a baby girl, her first child, Sunday afternoon, whom she and her husband named Hayden.

"At one point in the evening she asked me what contractions feel like," said Burke's friend Beth Serrill. "Within about an hour, her water broke."

Burke said she and baby Hayden are doing well.

Museum Executive Director Peter Olson said staff plans on giving Burke a free family membership and a museum-themed onesie for the baby.

"We'd like to think of her as the Children's Museum's first baby," he said.

Burke said she was already planning on getting a membership. She plans on taking Hayden to the new museum.

The museum opens at 9 a.m. Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Museum admission is free Friday and Saturday.
