— What a fall it has been — if you can really call the season we are currently in “fall.”
When I think of fall I think of the changing leaves, apple orchard visits, combines out in the fields and outdoor football games. Snow, freezing rain and lack of sun aren’t usually in my fall vocabulary, but they are this year.
This is also the first year that my husband is a partner in his family’s farming operation in northern Minnesota. There is a saying that challenges build character. I think after this year we are filled to the brim with character. Soybeans are still in the field, and it’s a race against Mother Nature to get the crop out. (I won’t even get into the corn harvest, which is now looking to be an early spring event.) But with farming you have to take the bad with the good. I am ready for some good next year.
For those of you waiting to finish up harvest, I hope the real fall shines through soon and we get the ideal weather you all need.
Fall in theory is a time of change. The leaves change colors, the warm weather changes into chills, and, for me, this fall has ushered in a different kind of change as well.
I am due to deliver our third child very soon, and my husband and I are thrilled to welcome another little one into our family. It is because of this, that I have decided to stay at home full-time after he/she is born.
It was a tough decision to leave The Land. I have been here 4 1/2 years and have enjoyed the intricacies of working for such a great publication. I will miss all the wonderful people in our office. Their dedication to this paper is unwavering and I am inspired by their hard work.
What I will also miss is talking to you, the readers. Whether I was interviewing someone for a “From the Fields” piece or needed to talk to an expert in the field (excuse the pun), people were willing to take time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge with me. You made my job so interesting and eye opening. I learned a tremendous amount on a wide range of topics and was truly honored to have the opportunity to learn from so many of you.
Thank you for making my time at The Land so memorable. Good luck with the rest of harvest; may it go quickly and safely and may the crop be plentiful.
