Land Minds: Fall brings changes

Originally published in the October 30, 2009, print edition.

What a fall it has been — if you can really call the season we are currently in “fall.”

When I think of fall I think of the changing leaves, apple orchard visits, combines out in the fields and outdoor football games. Snow, freezing rain and lack of sun aren’t usually in my fall vocabulary, but they are this year.

This is also the first year that my husband is a partner in his family’s farming operation in northern Minnesota. There is a saying that challenges build character. I think after this year we are filled to the brim with character. Soybeans are still in the field, and it’s a race against Mother Nature to get the crop out. (I won’t even get into the corn harvest, which is now looking to be an early spring event.) But with farming you have to take the bad with the good. I am ready for some good next year.

For those of you waiting to finish up harvest, I hope the real fall shines through soon and we get the ideal weather you all need.

Fall in theory is a time of change. The leaves change colors, the warm weather changes into chills, and, for me, this fall has ushered in a different kind of change as well.

I am due to deliver our third child very soon, and my husband and I are thrilled to welcome another little one into our family. It is because of this, that I have decided to stay at home full-time after he/she is born.

It was a tough decision to leave The Land. I have been here 4 1/2 years and have enjoyed the intricacies of working for such a great publication. I will miss all the wonderful people in our office. Their dedication to this paper is unwavering and I am inspired by their hard work.

What I will also miss is talking to you, the readers. Whether I was interviewing someone for a “From the Fields” piece or needed to talk to an expert in the field (excuse the pun), people were willing to take time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge with me. You made my job so interesting and eye opening. I learned a tremendous amount on a wide range of topics and was truly honored to have the opportunity to learn from so many of you.

Thank you for making my time at The Land so memorable. Good luck with the rest of harvest; may it go quickly and safely and may the crop be plentiful.

Any idiot can tell you what’s ALREADY happened. It takes a different kind of idiot entirely to claim he’ll tell you what WILL happen. On that note, here’s what we all have to look forward to in 2011…

  • Kevin Schulz Land Minds: Dennis helped others get better

The Land lost a family member Memorial Day weekend. Dennis John Kelly, writer of the "Grain Angles" column for 15 years, lost a short, but valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

  • Dick Hagen Land Minds: A lot to think about this spring

What a spring and kudos to you Minnesota farmers. I doubt if you ever have planted this much crop this early and this easily. There just weren't any serious challenges from Mother Nature.

  • Tom Royer Land Minds: Penance for justice

In each case, the legal system was forced to step in and exact justice when a so-called adult was criminally irresponsible. But what about when the legal system isn't allowed to step in, and justice is never served?

  • Kevin Schulz Land Minds: Planting progress unpredictable

I would have been picking you out a nice white jacket with extra buckles if only a month ago you had told me that the 2010 planting progress would be that far ahead of 2009 and the past five years.

  • Dick Hagen Land Minds: Desperate and disenfranchised

More and more Americans feel disenfranchised by their own government. The Tea Party movement is millions of free-enterprise citizens wanting to be heard. Their voices will be heard next November.

Nothing I’ve contracted is going to be featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Doug never dramatically treated a young boy for excessive phlegm on “E.R.”

  • Dick Hagen Land Minds: Bumps on the road to liberty

I sense we are becoming a nation of entitlements. And in the process of this slide into socialism, I sense that we can no longer rely upon the “political process” to reverse this uncomfortable transition. “What’s in it for me?” seems to be the new mantra now embraced by many people including our elected officials.

To get a taste of what our friends in the big-time, mainstream media are up to, I try to keep an eye out for New York Times stories that deal with farming and agriculture.
