Letter: ‘Merry Christmas’ said with pride of faith

Originally published in the Dec. 25, 2009, print edition.

To the Editor:

I just finished reading The Land Assistant Editor Tom Royer’s column about Christians and Christmas (Land Minds, Dec. 11). I appreciate his position that people should not be hostile or rude to each other regarding Christmas greetings, etc. However, I want to point out that when I say “Merry Christmas” I am not assuming that the other person is a Christian — I am saying it because I am a Christian and am proud of it. Why would that offend anyone?

I refuse to hide my own religion in an effort to be politically correct and I wouldn’t expect anyone else to either. If someone on the street said “Happy Hanukkah” to me, I would not be offended. I would smile because a stranger was friendly to me. If I want to give someone a generic greeting, I will say “have a nice day” not “happy holidays.”

As for the “activists” he refers to: There are fanatic weirdo freaks looking for a fight in every group out there. Please be careful not to imply that because I and others prefer “Merry Christmas” that we are in that category.
