Letter: Concerned about CO2? Start plugging those volcanoes

Originally published in the December 11, 2009, print edition.

To the Editor:

National Geographic has an explicit illustration of how statisticians are misleading people in regard to global warming. (December 2009 issue, Page 27)

The United Nations committee studying global warming stated that man was responsible for only about 3 percent of the carbon dioxide that went into the atmosphere; the rest came from livestock digestive processes, decay of wood, grasses, etc., volcanoes (100 or more active), forest fires, etc.

Antonino Zichich, professor emeritus at the University of Bologna, publisher of over 800 scientific papers and 10 books, has warned his students about the use of parameters when you attempt to resolve a problem. “If you give me four free parameters I can build you a mathematical model that describes exactly everything that an elephant can do. If you allow me a fifth free parameter, the model I build will forecast that the elephant will fly.”

Yet after noting that only 3 percent of the CO2 in the atmosphere comes from man, the author of the article comes to the conclusion that man’s use of fossil fuels will cause the earth to warm up and cause life to cease. No mention of the other 97 percent, yet one volcano can put more carbon in the air than man — but that is not even part of the story.

I’d like to suggest that your readers should read the “The Deniers” by Laurence Solomon. He portrays some of the 31,000 eminent scientists who believe that the global warming theory is a gigantic hoax.

The bath tub has been in place for millions of years and earth remains in excellent balance supporting more people than ever before. Shouldn’t we be trying to plug those volcanoes?
