Letter: Averys wrong on organics; put focus on imports
Originally published in the January 11, 2008, print edition.
To the Editor:
In response to the commentary “Move the poultry indoors for safety” (online at www.thelandonline .com; type “Avery” in the “Search our site” box), the negative comments about organic by Dennis and Alex Avery are totally unfounded.
Have you noticed that when eating chicken raised in confinement, how the meat is black next to the leg bone and how the bone is bent? We raise our own chickens and let them run free on the farm. When processed, they exhibit none of the characteristics that birds raised in confinement do.
Instead of on organics, our emphasis needs to be directed toward the people and products freely flowing into the United States. Have the people from outside our country been properly immunized before being allowed access into this country?
Also, what safety standards do other countries have for their products? We should not import any meat, dairy, poultry or other commodities. It only serves to undermine our farmers for corporate gain.
If the Averys could get past their globalistic and corporate farming views, maybe they could see what is right with organics.
