Ace of Spades: Spice it up — time to plant garlic

Originally published in the October 30, 2009, print edition.

I would like to dedicate this week’s column to Minnesota Lake resident Gloria Klinder and Lewisville resident Edgar Urevig who both passed away in early October.

Klinder worked with the 4-H programs many years, judging projects for many years at county fairs in southern Minnesota. She was also an excellent gardener.

Urevig was general manager of Tilney Farms. He was a knowledgeable person and always willing to help any of his co-workers.

Why does our garden have flowers that we never planted?

Birds spread many seeds. Seeds also can be blown and settled in your garden from a snow storm the previous year or even the year before that.

When is a good time to plant garlic?

Now would be fine to plant garlic. You should plant these about two inches deep, and add about three inches of mulch or leaves for winter.

I want to plant some asparagus for next year. Where can I purchase these seeds?

Asparagus seeds can be hard to find to purchase, as not all stores or nurseries have them for sale. Contact me and I may be able to help.

Can I add dirt around the base of my trees to plant flowers next spring?

Adding too much dirt around and under the tree could, in time, kill your tree. Many of the tree roots are not very deep, and the roots of the tree need oxygen.

What are some good garden magazines to order?

Garden Gate and Birds and Blooms are two of my favorite garden magazines. You may want to check a local store’s magazine rack and other sources before ordering a subscription to any garden magazine.

But a little rascal named Brooklyn Ann who came into the world June 3 at 6 pounds 15 1/2 ounces and 20-inches long is now the top priority. Brittany, 24, and mother of this newest addition couldn’t be more pleased.

Those were less secular times than today and, for some, bringing their Farmall C and oat seed in to be blessed was as important as a visit to their banker. Who, after all, plays a larger role in the success of your crop? The Lord or the bank?
