What are the names of some good climbing roses I could purchase?
There are several, but some of the best include William Baffin, John Cabot and Henry Kelsey. Valentine’s Day is a new species for this season. After the first year of growth, they do not need any mulch or covering for protection from frost or frozen ground. These varieties are quite disease- and insect-free.
I want to start a new raspberry bed next spring. What are some good varieties to plant?
Boyne is a good summer bearer; Heritage is also a good-bearing raspberry. Killarney is another good variety. If you are interested in planting any of these, I will provide more information to you in the spring.
Each spring I plant radishes, but they never grow well. What is the problem?
Have you ever taken a soil sample? Your soil certainly could be lacking something. Sometimes a covering of 10-10-10 will do wonders if no soil test is taken. Several varieties to try planting are French Breakfast, Cherry Belle, Champion and Sparkler. Hope this helps.
What are some good perennial flowers to plant in the spring?
Here are some of my favorites. Delphinium (there are several varieties), coreopsis for shade, dianthus (again several varieties), several cone flower varieties, gaillardia (several varieties, also known as blanket flower) and hardy perennial hibiscus (several varieties). Some of these plants will self seed themselves from the seed pods. Some are ideal for bird seeds throughout the winter. You may also try many varieties of Asiatic and Oriental lilies, which are perennials and will do well in full sun or in partial shade.
When can I replant my rhubarb?
You can plant rhubarb in the spring just as soon as new growth is beginning to surface. This is one plant in the garden that can be replanted most any time during the growing season. Once replanted, do not use the stalks until at least the second year.
Can I start my tomato seeds in a container now for a quick start in the spring?
Planting these seeds in early February will be soon enough; otherwise the plants get too tall before getting them outside. We have started tomato seeds in past years with good success. Always have these in the south window as much as possible for better growth when starting the seeds.
I would like to say “thank you” to all who have sent questions, comments, tips and ideas over the past year. My aim is to continue to give you the best information available. Soon the 2007 seed and flower catalogs will be arriving in the mailbox. Let me know if you are interested in receiving a spring catalog. Happy New Year and good gardening in ’07.
